Pioneering Maldivian Tourism with Vision and Purpose

A Conversation with Mr. Yoosuf Riffath, Founder & Executive Chairman, Capital Travel & Tours

The Maldives, with its turquoise lagoons and palm-fringed atolls, stands today as one of the most iconic luxury tourism destinations in the world. Yet behind this global identity are industry pioneers who laid the foundation brick by brick. Among them, Mr. Yoosuf Riffath, Founder and Executive Chairman of Capital Travel & Tours Private Limited, is a name synonymous with innovation, leadership, and transformative vision in Maldivian tourism.

We sat down with Mr. Riffath to discuss his journey, the evolution of the tourism sector, and what the future holds for local participation and sustainable industry development.

Mr. Riffath, your journey in the tourism sector began quite early. How did it all start?

I began my career in the civil service in the early 1980s, but I was always eager to be part of something dynamic and growing. Tourism was still young in Maldives at the time, and I recognized its potential. My first break came when I applied for a post with Universal Enterprises, one of the largest resort operators then. I spent nine years there, learning every aspect of resort operations and tourism business. That experience shaped my understanding of the industry and prepared me to begin my entrepreneurial journey.

In 1990, you founded Capital Travel & Tours. What were the early challenges in establishing a local tour operation business?

When we started, most resorts were heavily dependent on foreign tour operators. Local companies faced enormous challenges in gaining recognition and trust. There were many travel agents emerging at that time, but only a few succeeded. For us, perseverance, credibility, and relationship-building played a key role. We earned the confidence of resort operators and slowly built our reputation. Today, Capital Travel works with over 500 global partners and holds allotments with the leading resorts in the Maldives.

Capital Travel is now one of the country’s leading inbound tour operators. What services define your company today?

We provide end-to-end travel solutions including international flight bookings, resort and hotel reservations, local transfers, and customized holiday experiences. Our approach has always been to offer guests reliability, efficiency, and personalized service. Over the years, we have served thousands of travellers worldwide, catering to honeymooners, families, luxury seekers, and dive enthusiasts alike. With our industry knowledge and strong partnerships, we ensure guests get the best possible experience in the Maldives.

Capital Group later expanded into diversified business ventures. Could you share more about that?

In 2002, we formed ASTRABON Hotel & Resort Supply Pvt. Ltd., which has become a major supplier of kitchen equipment and hospitality products to Maldivian resorts. We also diversified into trading, office supplies, vehicle import, and automotive service operations. We believe in sustainable and steady diversification – always aligning with market gaps and future opportunities.

You have also been actively involved in industry development. How important is leadership in the tourism sector?

Tourism is not just a business; it is an ecosystem that provides opportunities for individuals, communities, and the nation. I have served as the founding president of MATATO and Maldives Travel Association, and currently serve as the Maldives Chapter President of ASTA and board member of MMPRC. I have also worked closely to support Liveaboard Tourism, being a founding member of the Liveaboard Association of Maldives (LAM). My belief is that when the industry grows, everyone should grow with it.

You have also shown keen interest in youth development and employment. What inspired this focus?

Tourism is the backbone of our economy, and our youth must be active participants in it. In 2006, I established the Employment Bureau (Maldives) Pvt. Ltd. to help train and prepare youth for hospitality careers. Creating opportunities and enabling self-sufficiency are deeply important to me. Empowering youth is empowering the future of the industry.

Looking ahead, what do you see as the next chapter of Maldivian tourism?

The next growth wave lies in local tourism – community-focused guesthouses, local experience travel, and authentic Maldivian hospitality. We are working on developing platforms and support systems to help small tourism operators strengthen their business operations, marketing, and market connectivity. The Maldives must continue to grow inclusively – bringing prosperity not just to resorts, but to communities across the nation.

For travelers looking for the perfect Maldivian holiday, why choose Capital Travel?

Whether it’s a romantic escape or a family vacation, planning can be overwhelming – especially with so many resorts to choose from. Capital Travel brings 27+ years of hands-on experience, trusted global partnerships, and the ability to offer exclusive deals, last-minute offers, and personalised travel planning. Closing Reflection

From a young aspirant to a respected tourism visionary, Mr. Yoosuf Riffath’s journey mirrors the evolution of Maldivian tourism itself – grounded in passion, sustained through perseverance, and guided by a commitment to shared growth. His work continues to shape how travellers experience the Maldives and how Maldivians participate in its tourism success story.
